Tarong are now contemplating using gas via pipeline to supply the energy source instead of coal.  Kunioon residents have been told that the area will be spared - FOR NOW!.  It still wishes to utilise the coal seams underground.  This has the same results as the Mary Valley people who have to now try and re-establish their lives after being disrupted and evicted for no reason!  Tarong has already taken control of many acres in the Kunioon area but do not have the entire area under their wing.

Nobody ever raised the concerns of the koalas living within the area - aren't they a protected species?

Tarong, Rio Tinto, Thiess and the likes all have their hands in the pot trying to use any tactic possible to remove local residents from their land.  Some have given in, some (and the number is growing rapidly) are staying and making a stand against these large companies.  Unfortunately the pressure to comply and stress placed upon some of the elderly residents has taken its toll.

The exploration drilling that has been done on site has resulted in bores left uncapped with water gushing for months during a drought.  This has resulted in spring fed dams that have never been dry being left baron dust bowls.

The water from all the creeks and waterways stemming from the Bunya Mountains will be affected by the 'pulling of the plug' at the bottom of  mother mountain.  This will affect the already tainted underground water supplies.  The entire Kunioon area is a giant valley which the mining companies call the 'amphitheatre'.  All the water which runs into this valley will be contaminated by the open cut coal seams .

As stated in the information sessions run by JTA - ALL LOCAL HISTORY WILL BE DEMOLISHED.

There are wildlife issues with endangered and threatened species within the Kunioon area.

With Kingaroy and Nanango towns being only a few klms away, toxic coal dust will be an issue.

Mining will continue 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  The magnificent views from the higher areas in Kingaroy and surrounds will be altered forever!

These are some pictures of the Kunioon area as it is now. (Click to enlarge)

This is what Kunioon may look like in the future                                                                                     Notice all the water needed for dust suppression.
